The undergraduate certificate in Documentary Production at Webster University is designed to give students from all disciplines the theoretical and practical skills to produce documentary films.
The curriculum focuses on the history of documentary films, media production and areas of anthropology and media studies. Students who complete the certificate in Documentary Production will build a core foundation in film studies and understand the filmmaking process, having opportunities throughout their studies to research, write, film, edit and distribute their films. The Documentary Production certificate is perfect for filmmakers, or students in other academic disciplines, who want to create compelling and meaningful media concerning their personal area of focus.
Certificate in Documentary Production Requirements
Webster University offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary Documentary Production Certificate program designed to benefit students from all backgrounds and academic disciplines to learn the skills needed to use storytelling to highlight real-life experiences and bring attention to social issues. Students will choose from a selection of courses designed to guide them through the production process, helping them to create compelling, memorable media.
Core certificate requirements:
- ANSO 1060 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3 hours)
- AUDI 1000 Audio Production for Non-Majors (3 hours)
- FTVP 1000 Introduction to Film, Television, and Video Production (3 hours)
- FTVP 3110 Documentary Production (3 hours)
One (1) of the following courses:
- ANSO 2850 Introduction to Research Methods (3 hours)
- JOUR 2140 Multimedia News Reporting II (2 hours)
and JOUR 2141 Multimedia News Reporting II Lab (1 hour)
One (1) of the following courses:
- AUDI 1063 Introduction to Podcasting (3 hours)
- EPMD 1000 Introduction to Media Productions (3 hours)
- FTVP 2300 Edit and Color (3 hours)
- INTM 1600 Introduction to Interactive Digital Media (3 hours)
- PHOT 3100 Documentary Photography and Photojournalism (3 hours)

Meet Our Mythical Mascot
The Gorlok is a mythical creature, uniquely created just for Webster University!
It has the paws of a speeding cheetah, the horns of a fierce buffalo and the face of a dependable Saint Bernard.
The myth of the Gorlok represents the high standards, atmosphere of fairness and good conduct that are so important to Webster University.
The name was chosen in June 1984 and takes inspiration from the intersection of Gore and Lockwood avenues, considered to be the heart of “Old Webster."
Webster University ran a contest in October 1984 challenging applicants to submit a sketch and description of what they thought a Gorlok would look like. The winning entry was a photograph of a furry creature holding a hand-held pump sprayer.

The Gorlok has evolved over time, continuing to be an important representative of the innovative and creative energy found at Webster University.
The first life-size Gorlok costume made its debut at a men’s basketball game in February 1988. The mascot stood 6 feet 3 inches and was covered in blue fur.
Today the Gorlok features golden fur, two horns on its head, and wears a blue letter jersey featuring a large, white “W” emblazoned on the front.
The Gorlok is an elusive creature who brings magic to campus. Keep your eyes open while you’re on campus, at athletic events and student life events, and you just might get a glimpse of the Gorlok in real life!
And don’t worry, the Gorlok is friendly! Don’t be afraid to snap a photo together.
